Téměř 54 % Čechů by se v cizině ztratilo a neuměli by si říct o pomoc. Neovládají totiž ani jeden cizí jazyk Příčinou jazykové negramotnosti české populace je vzdělávací systém. Povinná výuka ve školách začíná nejpozději ve třetí třídě a o čtyři roky později přibude další cizí řeč. Prim hraje angličtina, kterou se učí přes 90 % dětí. Podle národního plánu pro výuku jazyků by žáci devátých tříd měli zvládnout konverzaci na jednoduché téma s rodilým mluvčím. Praxe tomu však neodpovídá. Anglicky se „docela dobře“ domluví jen 27 %, německy pak 22 % lidí. Z toho je patrné, že českým školám se nedaří předat žákům základy potřebné ke zvládnutí jiné řeči než češtiny. Přitom počet odučených hodin nezaostává za zeměmi EU. Jsou tedy Čechům cizí jazyky opravdu cizí? Nikoli. Každý, kdo umí dobře česky, se může naučit i další cizí jazyk, tvrdí odborníci.
