Question by Denys D.: Which Language to learn, French or Spanish?


I live in NYC, I am a college student (heading towards a degree in veterinary medicine in some 8-10 years) and would really like to learn French. Although, I know that significant part of the population is Spanish speaking and so everyone around points out that it would be a better idea to take Spanish, Chinese, blah blah blah, etc. I feel lost because my interest in the subject is getting diluted by others’ comments. Please, give me some advice/hint on this.

You will NEVER learn a language if you don’t want to learn it (unless you are stranded in a foreign nation). Choose French, motivation and determination are half the battle in learning languages. Afterwards if you enjoyed French, it will give you a big advantage if you decide to learn Spanish, and you will probably enjoy learning both.

I’m a french major and love learning the language, so I definitely feel like motivation and desire are the most important aspects when it comes to choosing a language. Plus in my Spanish 101 class that I’m taking now I’m getting straight A’s, it’s so incredibly easy to pick up thanks to my French background.

The good news is that learning either one will facilitate you learning the other. If you were in Canada, I’d say that learning French would definitely be the best choice. But since you live in the US, I would say that Spanish might be the more useful language. If anything, it might be a good idea to ask professionals themselves what their opinions are. Ask your professors about what they think. At the end of the day, both languages are useful, so if you really want to learn French, do it. You might find that since many people are trying to learn Spanish, or already do speak Spanish, that you might be able to find a niche in which French might be more appreciated.
